The real taste of Venice
"La Hostaria" (The restaurant).
In "Andar per ombre", Club Unesco Venezia describes Ae Do Porte as: "... renowned for its excellent grilled fish and delicious fried food ..." and it is one of the few authentic Venetian "hostarie" to have survived the pizza and fast food onslaught.
It has never been somewhere to go just to eat. It combines the characteristics of the traditional restaurant with those of the "bacaro" [from Bacchus], the typical meeting place where Venetians go to gossip ("ciacole") over "cicchetti", the deliciously inviting hors d'oeuvres they eat throughout the day with an "ombreta de vin" [glass of wine].
Of course the wine is always fresh and of excellent quality (Venetians are famous for being particular when it comes to wine). But the "hostaria's" main claim to cultural fame is its meticulous care in preparing original versions of the recipes it serves. Like the famous "sarde in saor" (see description), prepared by the chef to a favourite recipe of the Doges: "dolse che e se desfa in boca" [so sweet it melts in your mouth] with pine kernels and raisins marinated in wine (the only place in Venice to serve this dish in its original form).

Just off the popular tourist trail, Ae Do Porte is never crowded and most of its customers are gondoliers, seamen, painters and Venetians who want to "magnar fora" [eat out].
